The industry should be made to drop this highly misleading term, which must have confused customers going back years.

It can take HDMI inputs and has a bit of a better picture, but you don't see truly amazing detail and to boot SD channels usually still look rubbish on them, and 1080 pictures are compromised somewhat too as the screen doesn't fit them either, a 720 TV turns out to be the worst of both worlds as I found out when I actually did replace it with a proper 1080p TV. That is the con trick of labelling these things as "HD Ready".īuyers might wonder why the picture isn't so amazingly different so SD and whilst it is a bit better it's not really all THAT much better, so not really worth going to the effort of replacing your TV for you might argue. Are old Analogue TV's with a SCART digital TV's because they are Digital ready, ie you could plug a Freeview box into them, and hey if they didn't even have a SCART socket and you had to use RF in, you could always buy an RF modulator so they would still be "Digital Ready" right? So what exactly are "HD Ready" TV's ready for? To stick a HDMI socket in the back, so if an SDTV with HDMI inputs were made, that would be "HD Ready" would it.

This lower resolution I think DOES make a difference, it's a million less pixels than the "Full HD" standard for a start and the industry by using the term "HD Ready" will have cynnically convinced quite a few casual buyers into picking up one of these TV's thinking they have now simply gone "HD". Whilst you may disagree perhaps, because we are talking about exactly what "HD" means, I find this became my latest bugbear when I won an Ebay auction before Christmas for a TV that they had listed as "1920x1080" but turned out to be a lower resolution 720p model (1366x768).
